Water
You can help PreppingWiki by expanding it.
Water is one of the essential resources to acquire in prepping, necessary for sustaining life as well as for cleaning and sanitation. It is recommended you have 1 gallon (~3.78 litres) per person per day.
Water Filtration
Water must be cleaned before it can be used. A water filter can remove debris, sediment and micro-organisms from water. If the water source is clean enough, filtering may be sufficient to make it suitable for drinking. Dirty or questionable water sources will need the additional step of water purification to make it for consumption.
Water Purification
Water must be purified before it is suitable for drinking. It is a step above water filtration, in which relatively large particles and micro-organisms are separated from the water. Water purification also removes chemicals and viruses which may pass through a typical water filter. Depending on water quality, water purification may not be necessary.
Water can be purified by heating it to a rolling boil, through chemical treatments such as water purification tablets, or with a much smaller filter that can remove viruses.
Water Storage
Water can be stored in several different ways, but it primarily depends on the space available to store it in.
Water Barrels
55-gallon water barrels can be used to efficiently store water if you have sufficient space.
Water Bricks
Water bricks are a stackable water storage solution that can easily fit in enclosed spaces or where space is limited.
Water Cans
Military-style water cans can be used to store moderate amounts of water, and is somewhat portable with the use of a vehicle.
Disposable Water Bottles
Cases of water bottles can be obtained at a grocery store, and can be handed out to other people easily.
