Lighting
You can help PreppingWiki by expanding it.
Lighting equipment and fuel are items acquired by preppers for security and productivity during a grid down situation.
- Flashlights
Flashlights are the most common form of emergency lighting, providing directional lighting where it's needed. Headlamps are a better option if you need to have that directional lighting hands-free.
- Lanterns
Lanterns are useful for lighting a larger area, such as a room or an outdoor space. LED Lanterns use rechargeable batteries, while hurricane lanterns and oil lanterns require wicks and their respective fuel to provide light. Propane gas lanterns are also an option that provides much greater amounts of light.
- Rechargeable LED Light Bulbs
Rechargeable LED light bulbs have their own rechargeable batteries that can be used as an alternative to regular light bulbs for every day use, as well as for emergency lighting in case the power goes out.
- Candles
Candles provide minimal amounts of light, but they can be grouped together and are cheap to acquire.
- Solar Pathway Light
Solar-powered pathway light are a useful option in an emergency. They can be place outside during the day to recharge and brought inside at night to use around the home.
- Motion-activated Security Lights
Motion-activated security light are very useful way to provide lighting. They don't require grid-power to operate and can let you know if someone is in the area where the light is placed. Alternatively, they can be used indoors similar to solar pathway lights but with the added benefit of lighting the area when someone is present.
- Glowsticks
Chemical light sticks (or glowsticks) are useful in a bug-out bag, providing a little bit of temporary light, as well as being used for signaling.
